Hydrovac Excavation Alberta
Excavation in Tight, Sensitive, or Complex Areas
Traditional mechanical excavation is fast — but it's not always the right tool. When you're working near underground utilities, in tight access areas, around existing structures, or anywhere that damage to surrounding property is a concern, hydrovac excavation is safer, more precise, and often faster in the long run. We use pressurized water to break up soil and a vacuum to remove it — exposing exactly what needs to be exposed without the risk of a backhoe.
When Hydrovac Is the Right Tool
Hydrovac isn't just for utility locates. It's used whenever standard excavation creates too much risk or disruption.
- Excavating near buried utilities — gas, water, electrical, telecom
- Tight access where equipment can't reach
- Exposing foundation walls without damaging them
- Working near existing structures, trees, or landscaping
- Precise excavation for foundation repair or weeping tile installation
How Hydrovac Excavation Works
Setup
The hydrovac truck positions at the site. Hoses are run to the excavation area — the truck itself can be parked away from the work zone.
Water Injection
Pressurized water is directed into the soil, breaking it up and turning it into a slurry. The water pressure is controlled to suit the material and sensitivity of the area.
Vacuum Extraction
The slurry is immediately vacuumed up and stored in the truck's debris tank — leaving a clean, controlled excavation.
Backfill & Restore
Once the work requiring access is complete, the area is backfilled and restored. The excavated material can be reused on site or hauled away.
