Crawlspace Columns & Pads Alberta

The Interior Support System That Holds Your Floor Up

Interior columns and their pad footings are the vertical support system beneath your floor. When they fail — through frost heave, deterioration, settlement, or under-sizing — the floor above sags, bounces, or slopes toward the failing point. Crawlspace columns and pads work is one of the most common repairs we perform across Northern Alberta, because the combination of frost, moisture, and aging materials makes these components particularly vulnerable.

Why Crawlspace Columns and Pads Fail

Column and pad failures in Northern Alberta crawlspaces share a common set of root causes:

  • Frost heave — unheated crawlspaces allow the ground under interior pads to freeze and heave, gradually displacing columns from their set position
  • Undersized original pads that have punched through softened bearing soil over decades
  • Wood post bases sitting on bare concrete or soil that absorbs moisture and rots the column base
  • Cracked or spalled concrete pads that can no longer distribute load to the bearing soil effectively
  • Adjustable steel columns that have corroded at the base plate and can no longer be reliably set
  • Original columns set at insufficient depth for Northern Alberta frost conditions

How We Correct Column and Pad Failures

1

Column and Pad Survey

We assess every column and pad in the crawlspace — measuring displacement, checking bearing condition, testing for rot or corrosion, and documenting what is failing versus what is still sound.

2

Shoring Installation

Temporary shoring is installed to carry beam loads before any column is removed or adjusted. No column is pulled without proper load transfer in place.

3

Pad Replacement

Failed concrete pads are removed and replaced with properly sized pads at appropriate depth. Where frost heave is the cause, pads are set deeper than the original to reduce susceptibility.

4

Column Installation

Deteriorated wood posts are replaced with adjustable steel columns, properly set and locked at design height. Steel columns eliminate the wood rot pathway and allow future adjustment if settlement continues.

5

Load Verification

We verify that each new column is properly bearing on its pad and that the beam is correctly supported before we remove temporary shoring. Floor plane is checked for level before job completion.

Temporary shoring throughout — no open spans under live load
New pads sized and placed for the actual load and soil conditions
Adjustable steel columns used for all replacements — no wood posts in wet conditions
Floor plane verified before job is marked complete
Connection to broader leveling or structural repair work if required
